Stays in the file
- Geometry: faces, edges, and openings
- Groups and components, with their names
- Materials and textures that year can store
- Layers, also called tags
Open it in older SketchUp
Save a 2024, 2025, or 2026 .skp so SketchUp 2017 through 2025 can open it. Geometry and layers stay. Materials stay when that year can store them. One file up to 10MB is free without an account, and sign-in adds one more. No install.

You need the .skp and the year the other computer runs. Drop the file, pick that year, and download the older copy. These three steps are how you downgrade SketchUp files.
Use the drop zone above, or click it and pick a file. The name has to end in .skp. The free cap is 10MB. A larger model uses the $2.99 pass, Pro at $5.99 a month, or $39 a year.
Open the target version menu. Leave 2017 selected when they say SketchUp Make 2017, or when they do not know the year. Switch to 2020, 2021, 2022, or 2023 when they name that install. 2024 and 2025 are there for a one-year step down.
Press the button once. A file within 10MB downloads for the year you picked. A larger file shows the $2.99, $5.99, and $39 plans. Keep the original next to the converted copy.

The older file keeps the parts you need to keep drawing. Presentation extras that the old year never stored can disappear. The original .skp is not changed.

Downgrade SketchUp files
SketchUp 2024 removed Save As for older years. A file from 2024, 2025, or 2026 will not open in SketchUp 2017, 2020, or 2022. Downgrade SketchUp files only after you know which year the other person still runs.
Without an account, one .skp up to 10MB converts. Sign in and that day includes one more free conversion. A larger model uses the $2.99 Emergency Pass, Pro at $5.99 a month, or $39 a year.
2017 opens on the most computers. A newer target keeps more of the model, because materials, scenes, and styles were added year by year.
Geometry, groups, and layers stay. Materials stay when that SketchUp year can store them. Scenes, dashed styles, and labels can drop. The original file is not overwritten.
A file over 10MB is not part of the free conversion. One model is $2.99, up to 150MB. Pro is $5.99 a month or $39 a year, with unlimited conversions, batch conversion, and the VIP queue.
Four jobs show up when someone has to downgrade SketchUp files. Each one starts with a newer .skp and an older install that refuses it. Keep the original. An older year can drop materials, scenes, dashed styles, and annotations.
An architect sends a 2024 .skp to a client who never left SketchUp 2017. The client gets a version error and sends it back. Set the target to 2017. Newer finishes may look flat, because 2017 cannot store every 2024 material. That exchange is a common reason to downgrade SketchUp files.
SketchUp Make 2017 users still download models from 3D Warehouse. The old version menu there is gone. Editing the download link, the trick people still share, only reaches about 2019. A 2024 or 2025 warehouse model needs a 2017 target before Make can open it.
A contractor on SketchUp 2020 asks for last week's model, saved in 2025 or 2026. Choose 2020, not 2017, so the file stays as new as that install allows. Scenes and line styles added after 2020 can disappear in the older format.
A class of 20 seats still runs SketchUp 2017 because the lab did not buy new licenses. A student working at home on SketchUp 2025 cannot hand the file in until it targets 2017. The free conversion is one 10MB file, plus one more after sign-in. Teachers convert the files to 2017 before class.
Someone already has a .skp, and another computer is still on an older SketchUp. They lower the file year so that computer can open the model.
The office keeps SketchUp current. The problem starts when a consultant, a visualization studio, or a client is still on 2017 or 2020. One file, one year, and the original stays in the office folder.
SketchUp Make 2017 was the last full free desktop release many hobbyists kept. They open their own old files. They cannot open a model a friend saved in 2024. They do not want to rent SketchUp to view one building.
Forum replies point to Dezmo Save to older SketchUp Version, Eneroth Open Newer Version, or a Ruby snippet that needs SketchUp Pro. Those are desktop installs. Here you only need the .skp and a year. You downgrade SketchUp files without adding a plugin.

Desktop plugins need SketchUp on the machine, often the copy that created the file. A Ruby snippet needs Pro. A desktop converter is another program to install. This page needs the .skp and a browser.
You do not install SketchUp 2017 beside SketchUp 2025. Pick the year on this page and download the older file. The license that owns the model is not required.
A save to 2017 can omit dashed styles, annotations, scenes, and materials that year never stored. Geometry, groups, and layers are kept. Choose the newest year the other person can still open.
One urgent file is $2.99, up to 150MB, and it does not renew. Pro is $5.99 a month or $39 a year for a 150MB cap, unlimited files, batch conversion, and the VIP queue.
Three habits prevent a second round trip. They come from the questions people ask after a file fails to open. Use them before you downgrade SketchUp files.
The converted file is a new copy, not an edit of the original. Leave the 2024, 2025, or 2026 file untouched so the full model still opens. When you downgrade SketchUp files, do not overwrite the original.
2017 is the default because it is the widest net. If the recipient runs SketchUp 2022, choose 2022. You keep more of the model, and you avoid another save when they write back.
The year menu changes the file, not a SketchUp subscription. It does not cancel a seat or change a renewal.
A SketchUp file version gap is why a newer .skp will not open in an older install. SketchUp writes the year into the file. SketchUp 2017 opens a 2017 file. It refuses a file saved by SketchUp 2024, 2025, or 2026. People call the fix downgrade SketchUp files. The change is the file year, not the subscription.
Through SketchUp 2023, File then Save As still listed older years. SketchUp 2024 removed that menu. The format had already dropped a simple year label in 2022. A Pro user can try a Ruby console snippet. Everyone else looks for a plugin or a separate tool.
The menu lists 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. The default is 2017. SketchUp 2026 and 2027 are not save targets. 2017 is the year clients and SketchUp Make users still name when a model will not open.
One .skp up to 10MB is free without an account. Sign in for one more that day. One model up to 150MB is $2.99 and does not renew. Pro is $5.99 a month, or $39 a year: less than 14 one-time files, about $3.25 a month.
FAQs
Drop the .skp, pick a year from 2017 through 2025, and download the older file. SketchUp 2024 removed that year list from File, Save As. One file up to 10MB is free without an account. Sign in for one more that day.
Yes. Drop one .skp, pick a year from 2017 through 2025, and download the converted file. SketchUp Pro and a plugin are not required.
Add the file, choose 2017 if the other person uses SketchUp Make 2017, or choose the year they name. One file up to 10MB is free without an account. Sign in for one more that day.
Pick the older year on the version menu. It lists 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. The default is 2017. Conversion downloads a new .skp for that year and leaves the original file unchanged.
SketchUp 2017 cannot open a 2024 or 2025 .skp directly. Choose 2017 and download the converted file. Newer materials, scenes, and styles are the first details an older format can omit.
SketchUp Make 2017 opens models saved for 2017 or earlier. A 3D Warehouse model from 2024 or later fails with a version error. Set the target to 2017 and download the converted file. No account is required for a file inside the free limit.
In SketchUp 2023 and earlier, File, Save As still offered an older year. SketchUp 2024 removed that control. Drop the file here, pick the year, and download the older .skp. You do not need a Ruby console or a plugin.
A SketchUp 2026 file is newer than every year on the menu. Choose the year the recipient actually has, often 2017 or 2020. Saving down from 2026 can omit features that year did not store. Download the new file and keep the 2026 original.
The .skp format is not backward compatible. A newer year can add materials, line styles, annotations, and scene data that the older application does not understand, so it refuses the file. That is a version mismatch, not a broken download.
A version mismatch is one common cause: a 2024, 2025, or 2026 file opened in 2017 or 2020. Convert it to the year that computer runs. This does not repair a corrupt file, a missing component, or a model that opens and then clips when you zoom.
Lower the file year, not the SketchUp subscription. Select a target from 2017 through 2025. 2017 is the usual choice when the other computer is old. One file is $2.99. Pro is $5.99 a month, or $39 a year, for files up to 150MB.
Downgrade SketchUp files, not the Trimble plan. SketchUp 2024 is the release that removed Save As for older years. Picking 2017, 2020, or 2023 here does not cancel, refund, or change a SketchUp subscription.
Choose 2020 on the version menu if the contractor still runs SketchUp 2020. A 2025 model will not open there until it is saved as 2020. Keep the original 2025 file. An older save can drop styles and annotations that 2020 never had.
Yes. One .skp up to 10MB is free without an account. Sign in and that day includes one more free conversion. Files over 10MB use the $2.99 Emergency Pass, or Pro at $5.99 a month or $39 a year, up to 150MB.
Yes. You do not install SketchUp, the Dezmo extension, the Eneroth extension, or a desktop converter. Convert the .skp in the browser. A file inside the free limit does not require an account.
Use the same page on macOS or Windows. There is no separate Mac app. The free conversion is still one .skp up to 10MB, and the target years are still 2017 through 2025.
Drop one .skp, pick 2017 or the year they named, and download the older file.
